MAN. MAAAAAN I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS ARC.
Wasn't it mentioned in the hospital later that Joey was lucky to get away with minor burns?
That entrance was consumed
There's no way
But with Yami able to reach out to Joey even though Yugi's unconscious... I can't help but feel like Yami also gave them protection while Joey got them out of there.
And man the idea of it just gets me a little. A LOT.
Right! He'd been standing in for who knows how long waiting for him. As Joey said, which became one of my favourite quotes in the entire manga – "I'll stay with you on the edge of the river Styx, but I won't let you cross over". I really do not believe it impossible for Yami to lend a hand somehow. God knows he'd never EVER let it go if those two both died in there.
I also completely agree with your tags, the anime butchered this little arc and the decision to scatter its parts across completely separate instances will forever be lost on me. It lacks a lot of the nuances the original scenario had
Also agreeing with YOUR tags because I've been saying this over and over as my partner and I have been going through the series. We've had a system. We watch a few episodes, and then I send her the bits of the manga that show very clearly how we've been completely robbed.
Yugi and Joey's relationship was so integral to the story in the manga that it just starts to feel really weird when you realize most of the changes made in the anime have been to plots and character motivations/development that focus very deeply on those two specifically and particularly how they intertwine with each other.
What exactly was it the anime writers felt was an issue with this, I wonder...
Also just wanted to say the River Styx line... Had the wind knocked out of me reading that for the first time... I was not expecting a line that raw to come out of Joey's mouth and yet it's not out of character in the slightest.
Still kills me thinking about how Joey said he'd hit Yugi if he had to to get him to leave when the time came.
But the time came and he didn't. He couldn't force Yugi to let go of the puzzle (I'm sure he could have, but he didn't) and he couldn't leave him there and so he just wraps around him and cries because it's all that's left.
God I love talking about this story.
A Treatise on the Dynamic Between Yugi and Atem - Part 7
Conclusion
Through their two year journey together and in each of their duels, Yugi and Atem were both able to gain something from the other until they were whole enough to go their separate ways. This was evidenced in the Ceremonial Duel when Atem was able to lose gracefully to Yugi, who had matured enough as a duelist to be able to create a whole new deck and even defeat Atem's Osiris.
In the beginning, Atem and Yugi were both incomplete souls, each possessing something the other lacked. Through their cooperation and close bond, two souls were made whole.
